Tourism is one of the largest and fastest growing industries
of the world. Tourism plays a crucial role in the economic development of a
country. It is a big foreign exchange earner. Moreover, it lends opportunity
to the people of one nation to
understand culture, civilization and development of countries. So tourism works
as chain in establishing warm relations among the people of the world. When a
tourist visits a foreign country he gets an opportunity to know and understand
the views of its people and their views about the country to which the tourist
belongs. Another advantage of the tourism industry is that it provides
employment to various persons because several persons have to engage in this
sphere to take care of both the tourists and the tourist places. But the most
important benefit provided by the tourism industry is to give a sense of relief
to people when they get tired from the hustle and bustle of the city-life. They
pay a visit to the tourist places and try to enjoy nature which gives everlasting
sense of joy and peace.
Nepal has the right ingredients and potential for development of tourist industry. It has varied and interesting adventure to offer. We have in Nepal, Mt. Everest, the top of the world to climb, the grate Himalayan trail that stretches 1,700 km- a trek that takes a month to accomplish, Rafting trips where you encounter magnificent Georges- from one or two days to two week expedition, hidden world of the old Buddhist kingdom of Mustang to explore, etc.
Unfortunately, despite Nepal’s potential for tourism,
Nepal’s share in the world’s tourism business is still less the 1 percent. In
2012, 598,204 foreigners visited Nepal as compare 53,219 foreigners more than
2011. Tourism is currently Nepal’s largest foreign exchange generator. In 2012,
government revenue from tourism sector was Rs. 36.6 billion and the total
contribution to GDP was Rs. 147.2 billion, 9.4 percent of total GDP. Recognizing
the significance of tourism as a tool of economic development, the Government
in 1978 gave it a status of ministry.
Nepal’s efforts to promote tourism have been monumental. Beside Nepal’s embassies in foreign countries has helped in organizing festivals of Nepal aboard and smaller promotional programs for travel agents, tour operator and media.
To diversify tourist attraction Nepal tourism board has to lay the policy for ‘strengthening the infrastructure at home and has to undertake promotional activities to attract more foreigner.’ Planning and development of required facilities in identified and identifying “travel circuits” has to develop according to a certain standard that meets tourist’s actual demand.
In the year 2011“NEPAL TOURISM YEAR”, the target of wooing 1 million tourists failed to attain because of economy recession in Europe and in America. Political upheavals, the tension created by pro- ethnic based federalism and anti- ethnic based federalism by shutting down again and again is also responsible for the downfall in tourist. But still one of the most important factor for its failure is Nepal has not given the tourism industry the attention it deserves.
So, the responsible ministry has to give priority to the tourism industry and its development. Tourism sector or industry is the backbone of country, if it, it cripples, Nepal too will cripple as remittances will not going to work for the long term.
